Privacy Policy
BirdQuest AI ("BirdQuest," "we," "us," or "our"), operated by Kaspar Works, LLC, respects your privacy. This policy explains what information the BirdQuest AI app collects, how we use it, and the choices you have.
By using BirdQuest AI, you agree to this Privacy Policy.
Information We Collect
Account information. You sign in with Sign in with Apple. We receive a unique Apple user identifier and, if you choose to share it, your name and email address (which may be an Apple private-relay address). We do not receive your Apple password.
Photos you identify. When you take or select a photo to identify a bird, that image is sent to our servers and to our AI processing provider (OpenAI) to analyze it. We do not store the original photo after the identification is complete. Only the identification result and any details you choose to save (such as the species, your notes, the date, and—if you tag it—the location) are kept in your account.
Location (optional). If you choose to tag a sighting with its location, we use your device's location to record where the sighting occurred and to show it on your map. Location is collected only when you actively tag a sighting; you can decline location access and still use the app.
Your content. Birds you save, collections, journal entries, field notes, and questions you ask the in-app AI Bird Expert are stored in your account so the app can function across your devices.
Usage data. We keep basic records needed to run the service, such as your daily identification count (to apply free/premium limits) and your achievements and progress.
Subscriptions. BirdQuest Premium is purchased through Apple. Apple processes your payment; we do not receive your credit-card or payment details. We receive transaction information from Apple to verify your subscription status and unlock premium features.
We do not use third-party advertising or tracking SDKs, and we do not track you across other apps or websites.
How We Use Your Information
We use the information above to:
- Identify birds from your photos and provide AI insights and answers;
- Save and sync your collection, journal, sightings, and map;
- Apply free and premium usage limits and manage your subscription;
- Maintain, secure, and improve the service;
- Respond to your support requests.
How We Share Information
We do not sell your personal information. We share data only with service providers who help us operate the app, and only as needed:
- OpenAI — processes the photos and questions you submit to generate identifications, insights, and answers. (openai.com/policies)
- Apple — provides Sign in with Apple and processes subscription payments. (apple.com/legal/privacy)
- Our hosting and database providers — store your account data securely on our behalf.
We may also disclose information if required by law or to protect the rights, safety, or security of our users or the service.
Data Retention
We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. Identification photos are not retained after processing. You can delete your data at any time (see below), and we delete account data when you delete your account.
Your Choices and Rights
- Access and deletion. You can delete your saved birds, journal entries, and sightings in the app, and you can delete your entire account from the app, which removes your associated data.
- Permissions. You can grant or revoke Camera and Location access at any time in your device's Settings.
- Depending on where you live (e.g., the EEA, UK, or California), you may have additional rights to access, correct, or delete your personal data. Contact us to exercise them.
Security
We use industry-standard measures, including encrypted connections (HTTPS) and access controls, to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to safeguard your data.
Children's Privacy
BirdQuest AI is intended for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your country). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under that age. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.
International Users
Your information may be processed and stored on servers located outside your country, including in the United States. By using the app, you consent to this transfer and processing.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will revise the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
